Nats Take Back Johns River

Williams Wins Port Macquarie and Johns River

Congratulations to Leslie Williams, the new National Party MP for Port Macquarie in the NSW State Legislature!  The Johns River community welcomes Leslie.Working with our Landcare volunteers to protect and enhance our environment.Working with our Landcare volunteers to protect and enhance our environment.

With big swing away from incumbent Independent MP Peter Bessling, (two-party preferred) Leslie had a solid win across the entire Port Macquarie electorate, with over 56.9% of the overall vote.

Mrs. Williams scored a similarly large win in Johns River, with 116 votes to Mr. Besseling's 84 (two candidate preferred) after preferences, with strong sentiment in favour of the Nationals.  Only a single informal vote was recorded, which was a record for Johns River, possibly indicating strong sentiment.

Much of Leslie's local popularity was helped by a door-to-door visit she made in the village, talking with residents and business people earlier in the five-week long campaign period.

Leslie and her campaign crew were prominent at our recent Johns River Jubilee and were a major sponsor of our village event,  Mrs. Williams contributed her time, effort and a gracious contribution to assist our village event and future plans.

She underscored during her visit then that she too was from a small rural community much like Johns River, and really enjoyed the relaxed country atmosphere of our little village.

Roads a Major Issue

As roads continue to be one of the top issues in our village surveys, it is great that Leslie Williams has underscored her willingness to work with our new Roads Minister, The Hon. Mr. Duncan Gay.Making State funding of our roads a priority with Andrew Storer, the Shadow Minister for Roads.Making State funding of our roads a priority with Andrew Storer, the Shadow Minister for Roads.

Additionally, her already close relationship with the new Deputy Premier, Andrew Stoner, and his new portfolios of Trade and Investment, and Regional Infrastructure and Services should be of great assistance for Mrs. Williams to make headway with infrastructure and investement projects in our area.

The gateway signage for the three bypassed communities of Kew, Johns River and Moorland will be of great benefit to both motorists and to village businesses in those communities,   The RTA Grafton office has paid for a local photographer to capture the essence of our Three Brothers Region, which will go onto the highway signs.

With luck, our new MP will have the right connections at the right times to ensure this project comes to fruition in the near future.

Williams at Community Public Forum

Leslie has confirmed that she will attend a Community Public Forum for all local communities on the 16th of April at the Johns River Village Hall.

All villagers and those of the surrounding communities will be updated in a special flyer going out in about a week listing attendees for the Q&A style panel focussing on many issues in our part of the Camden Haven.  See more about the forum here
