The Nationals "clean sweep" of our local electorates on the Mid North Coast has meant some top party members in key government ministries.

Our new Deputy Premier Mr. Andrew Stoner is taking on a new role as Minister for Trade & Investment, and has vowed to appoint at least one representative from the regions on the board of Infrastructure NSW.

His commitment to ensure the voice of regional Australia is heard loudly and clearly will be evident in his actions as the Minister for Regional Infrastructure and Services as well.

A new special business unit is being set up for Mr. Stoner's office within the Premier's office, where Mr. Stoner's business education and background will come to the fore as he puts in place a business plan for the state.

Nats Take Back Johns River

Williams Wins Port Macquarie and Johns River

Congratulations to Leslie Williams, the new National Party MP for Port Macquarie in the NSW State Legislature!  The Johns River community welcomes Leslie.Working with our Landcare volunteers to protect and enhance our environment.Working with our Landcare volunteers to protect and enhance our environment.

With big swing away from incumbent Independent MP Peter Bessling, (two-party preferred) Leslie had a solid win across the entire Port Macquarie electorate, with over 56.9% of the overall vote.

Mrs. Williams scored a similarly large win in Johns River, with 116 votes to Mr. Besseling's 84 (two candidate preferred) after preferences, with strong sentiment in favour of the Nationals.  Only a single informal vote was recorded, which was a record for Johns River, possibly indicating strong sentiment.

Much of Leslie's local popularity was helped by a door-to-door visit she made in the village, talking with residents and business people earlier in the five-week long campaign period.

The Port Macquarie State Electorate

The Port Macquarie electorate is one of eight North Coast electorates in NSW, incorporating parts of the Hastings and Greater Taree local government areas.

Map of the Electorate of Port Macquarie, NSW State GovernmentNSW State Electorate Map of Port Macquarie, including Laurieton and Harrington

Currently held by the Nationals Leslie Williams, It stretches from just north of Port at Point Plomer, down to Harrington Waters at it's southernmost point, taking in all of the Camden Haven communities in it's reach, including of course, Johns River and the entire Stewarts River valley.

With a total population of 60,000 residents, it's a largely centrist and progressive voting electorate, with 3 out of 5  residents having no children or being single parents, groups notionally less likely to embrace particularly conservative values, more common amongst the one-quarter of the no-children block who are 65 or older.   Port Macquarie has the second-highest average ages of all state electorates.

It's a growing electorate too, having an average net influx of just over 1000 new residents annually over the last decade, most of which arrive from Sydney suburbs Penrith, Bankstown, Blacktown and Gosford amongst others.

PACIFIC HIGHWAY UPGRADE

Mr PETER BESSELING (Port Macquarie) [1.57 p.m.]: The month of July is set to mark the official completion of the much-heralded Coopernook to Herons Creek upgrade of the Pacific Highway.

Aside from the Bulahdelah bypass that is currently underway, this highly anticipated upgrade will provide for a dual carriageway road from Sydney right through to Port Macquarie. With the Herons Creek to Stills Road upgrade and Oxley Highway upgrade projects both due for completion within the next two years, we will provide travellers with a safe and efficient pathway that will deliver visitors right through to Port Macquarie's doorstep.
The Pacific Highway upgrade has made a significant impact on local communities within the Port Macquarie electorate and has impacted greatly on the local economies of our surrounding towns and villages. The local jobs and economic stimulus that the project has provided for our region cannot be underestimated and have been clearly seen through the impact on local accommodation, subcontractors, suppliers of materials and equipment hire businesses all the way through to the smaller general stores within communities located along the highway.

Private Members' Statement by Oakeshott Mr Robert

JOHNS RIVER COMMUNITY PROGRESS ASSOCIATION

5 March 2008

Mr ROBERT OAKESHOTT (Port Macquarie) [10.57 a.m.]: The Johns River Community Progress Association is a local community organisation that is a model on the mid North Coast for projects that are driven from the ground up. The association not only faces the substantial challenges posed by serving a community split by the Pacific Highway and the North Coast railway line, but also must deal with the implications for the community of the Pacific Highway upgrade and a bypass that added to its difficulties. I have been extremely impressed by the association's work in identifying the issues before it. Rather than expecting the local council, the State Government or the Federal Government to come up with solutions to the issues at Johns River, it has arrived at some local solutions. It has presented what is now a substantial package to all three levels of government, which makes it very easy to try to assist the Johns River village and community.
