Johns River Goes to Finals! PDF Print E-mail

The Johns River Community Progress Association (JRCPA) have made it to the top ten in the semi-finals of the NSW Department of Trade and Industry's Business Development Organisation award category for the 2011 NSW/ACT regional Achievement and Community Awards.

JRPCA President David Shepard states that "Our little village is really blown away by the honour. We had no idea that we could even place in the top ten, given the over three hundred entries from across the state".

"Award staff have confirmed to us that we were very close in the running, and that there were a lot of ruminations in our favour in the judging process".

Established by village representatives in 2007 due to the construction of a town bypass, The Johns River Community Progress Association saw to represent its community by lobbying local, state and federal representatives to ensure the community was consulted and involved in the long process of a bypass, which aimed to cut off their town and sources of income provided by travellers and interstate visitors who pass through the town daily.

"We have held, sponsored and facilitated over ten Public Community forums on a wide range of issues, from the road-building process to more recently, policing, signage and road conditions with our local Member for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams", add Mr. Shepard.

The Lights are On!

The Three Brothers communities of Kew, Johns River, and Moorland will remain firmly on the tourist map twenty-four hours a day, with the announcement today that the location markers would be illuminated!

Deputy Premier Andrew Stoner and Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams also announced that new lighting would be installed for the existing location marker signs at both Coopernook and Harrington.

The new signs for the Three Brothers communities will be now be built with the lighting option included, once further community consultation on the final designs is completed in the coming months.

New Lights for Harro and Coopernook

"I'm pleased to announce today that work to install overhead lighting which will illuminate signs at the intersection of the Pacific Highway with Coopernook and Harrington roads will soon start and be completed by the end of October," Mr Stoner said.
The lights are being installed in response to a request from community members who were concerned highway users were not aware they were passing Coopernook and Harrington at night.
"In addition to normal highway signs, the Coopernook and Harrington intersections feature location markers which let highway users know they are passing a town.

Signage Issues Heard

NSW Minister for Roads and New Transport for NSW Supremo Duncan Gay with Local Port Macquarie MP, Leslie Williams at Rosies in Johns RiverNSW Minister for Roads the Hon. Duncan Gay with Local Port Macquarie MP, Leslie Williams at Rosies in Johns River
Leslie Williams praised the communities of Harrington, Coopernook, Kew, Johns River and Moorland for their advocacy on this issue.
"Roads Minister Duncan Gay was left in no doubt that the town location markers must be illuminated so I am glad we now know exactly when that will happen," Mrs Williams said, going on to underscore how effective the existing location markers have been for Harringon and Coopernook.  "The new lighting means they will continue to promote the towns at night."

Stay Tuned for Final Designs!

The concept designs with the new lighting facilities are being worked out now at the RTA using an expert design firm for the six new locality markers going in, two each at Kew, Johns River and Moorland.

The Three Brothers communities should be proud of their efforts in submitting photographs to the RTA for their consideration, and the communities will all be asked for comment on the final sign, so stay tuned for more information as it happens here in the Johns River Journal and local media.

Highway signage for the bypassed villages of Kew, Johns River and Moorland were always a big issue at community forums and in local surveys alike.

In May of 2010, JRCPA President David Shepard met with the then-Roads Minister Nathan Borger during the opening of the Johns River Bypass, to underscore the importance of identifying our bypassed villages to passing motorists.  Location Marker for Moorland - Second Draft sketchLocation Marker for Moorland - Second Draft sketch The ideas were well-received by the Minister and a pilot program was set in place at the RTA.

Early drafts were done for the unique “Location Markers”, which will include the town name as well as a large horizontal panel to show off photos of the best of the community and region.

The Johns River Journal and other area newspapers advertised for submissions from the community, for photographs and ideas for each of the photo panels.    Being a project of interest to the Three Brothers Network,  3BN Chair Lorri Fischer organised many submissions to the judging panel, to ensure they understood what our beautiful region was all about.

The Sign Has Arrived!

The Johns River Town Entrance Sign

The new support poles went up Tuesday for the Johns River Town Entrance Sign, and today the sign itself was put in!

Council workers have made sure the poles and sign are solid and will withstand heavy winds.  The foundations will need to dry before the entrance sign itself is affixed within the next few days.

The new sign is a result of a week of community consultation in November last year, when the first draft sign was put forward by GTCC tourism management.
After the initial draft received over 30 comments from villagers, the final town entrance signage version was carefully crafted by GTCC Tourism officials to reflect the wishes of the majority of people commenting.
The resulting sign gives a more accurate reflection of our village, highlighting nearby Watson-Taylor's Lake, Middle Brother and the Village heart.   This sign compliments the one at Moorland, which features South Brother, very prominent there when approaching from the south especially.
According to the Manning Valley website, "We have included a Friesian cow which was requested by many over the goats and have also chosen a fresh local produce image to better portray the Johns River markets. We have now included the old saw blade instead of the osprey as many commented on the rich history of the area and its tall timbers."

Looks like an excellent result!
