The Birds, Kidds, Hoggs, Crossinghams and more started to snap up
land in the area.
What is in a Name?
Early settlers (according to several Johns River residents) referred
to the lower part of the river as John's River, and the upper (above
the tidal mark) as Stewart's River. John Stewart and
John Oxley of course had both surveyed the area.
Maltese and other workers laid rail through the area in 1917 on
the day that Prince John died in England, the idiot son of King Edward.
Whatever the case, there are enough "John" associations with the location,
but few definitive historical records have as yet come to light -- at
least to us!
Rather amusingly, a 1953 letter to Council in the Progress Assocation
correspondance record indicates that the residents of Johns River would
indeed be interested in having electricity should Council offer the
service in the area!
