NBN Wireless in Three Brothers Region PDF Print E-mail

NBN Co Home PageThe company building Australia's national broadband network, NBN Co, has announced that our Three Brothers communities will be receiving high-speed fixed wireless broadband.

Interested residents, businesses, and particularly representatives and members of local area community groups across the Northern Manning/Three Brothers Region are invited to the Johns River hall at 3pm on Tuesday, May 22nd, to take part in an information session with NBNCo representatives.

The information session will outline how the fixed-wireless network will deliver high-speed broadband to the villages of Johns River, Hannam Vale, and Moorland at speeds up to eight times faster than ADSL, and six times faster than the current 3G wireless offered in Johns River through Optus, Virgin and Telstra. The meeting will also encompass the Harrington and Coopernook areas, and all interested parties are invited.

Some pockets and valleys around Middle Brother and Juhles Mountain may be furnished with NBN Co's Long Term Satellite service instead of the fixed wireless, due to shadows caused by ridges which may block a small portion of the fixed wireless broadband tower signals.

Most of Johns River (parts of Isaac’s Lane excepted) has never had access to ADSL or ADSL2 high-speed broadband, due to it’s location over 5km from the main exchange on the back side of South Brother Mountain.

Over 15,000 premises across seven local government areas will be outfitted with the fixed wireless broadband as part of the launch, with service beginning around mid-2013.

Unlike a mobile wireless service (like 3G and current wireless offerings), where speeds can be affected by the number of people moving into and out of the area, NBN Co's fixed wireless network is engineered to deliver services to a fixed number of premises within a coverage area (a “4G” solution).

Light refreshments will be available at the hall after the meeting.

Please let others know of this meeting should you or your organisation have an interest, thanks!

Speeches by Federal Member for Lyne, Rob Oakeshott, MP, Greater Taree City Council Mayor Paul Hogan, and JRCPA President David Shepard underscored the whole-of-community approach to funding and realising the landmark project.

The template forged during the Johns River pilot project has now been used across the Council area, and shows how community and government can work together to fund and make on-the-ground action possible.

Three Brothers transition plan workshop PDF Print E-mail
Planning - The Village Plan
Wednesday, 09 May 2012 06:37

The first series of workshops in March of the Three Brothers Network gathered together over 30 community groups and businesses from Coopernook and Moorland in the south to Kendall and Kew in the north as well as many interested parties and made a great start in identifying key issues and opportunities for the region.

A further intense workshop is now planned for Thursday May 10 at the Kendall Services & Citizens Club starting at 5.30 pm.

This workshop will firm up the ideas into action plans and strategies to be pursued by a number of working groups. The key areas are currently:

*The Best ways to work together. (Cooperation between areas, common issues and concerns, getting information to the community and getting around etc.)

*An Eye to the Future (Making the most of opportunities that will arise in the future: - NBN, local energy sources, education and employment hubs etc.)

* Nurturing the Land (securing our rural base and food supply in the future, new ways of thinking)

*Showcasing & Exploring Our Region (What the region has to offer visitors and how to enhance those resources)

*Doing Business in Three Brothers (The challenges and potential of small businesses in small towns and villages)

However there is still time for additional ideas and actions to be discussed. For any further information contact Kevin Williams - Project Facilitator. Tel: 6556 5103 and please for catering purposes RSVP by May 7.

Council Budget Features Johns River and Region PDF Print E-mail
Planning - Greater Taree City Council

Council Road Team along Station StreetCouncil Road Team along Station Street
Some key points in proposed 2012-2013 council budget will mean good news for Johns River and the Three Brothers Region as well, with the Cattai Wetlands due to be open permanently to the public, after nine long years of tireless effort on behalf of the community and Council staff.

Our Gravel Roads

Local residents along Wharf Road and Isaac’s Lane will be glad to hear that Council is funding and modernising its approach to road maintenance, with a trial of new methods and materials to improve the life of unsealed roads slated.

This funding of new methods is in addition the almost two million dollars being spent this financial year on high-priority re-sheeting of gravel roads, such as Cedar Party and Bobin Road, part of a $1 million Federal funding program.  Nearly half of the re-sheeting budget ($977,000) for other gravel road re-sheeting is thanks to the special rate variation approved by the State Government.

The cost to Council to do gravel re-sheeting runs between $45,000 and $68,000 per kilometre of works.   Full re-sheeting works are generally reserved for more heavily trafficked roads than our local gravel roads, with our roads to benefit from the funding this financial year for new methods and new materials to promote more effective maintenance of our local gravel roads.

Report that Road!

The Progress Association has had several calls and e-mails from residents along Wharf Road, Isaac’s Lane and Stewart’s River Road about the increasingly deplorable condition along those local roads.

Residents are urged to lodge a formal complaint with Council on 6592 5399, and to ensure they record their reference number.

Your call only takes a few minutes, and every individual voice we can have on record really helps.    Please forward the five-digit reference number to the President, JRCPA on This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it , or 6556 5292.   Include your name, address, and the general nature of the complaint lodged, and we will follow up with Council after two to three weeks.

Further investment in how our roads get fixed is also on the new Council budget books, with additional plant and management of equipment (fleet and plant) to enhance and ensure the effectiveness of the work crews we see out here on our country roads.  The new equipment and workflow techniques are both vital in making sure we get those roads in shape, and that they stay in shape for longer once done.

Around the Corner

Once the bypass opened in Johns River, the majority of traffic began to flow between Wharf Road and the new Roundabout.

As part of the Coopernook to Herons Creek highway upgrade, the RMS provided funding to Council to upgrade the main intersection in Johns River to enhance traffic safety.

Council has now scheduled works along Johns River Road to realign the road to reflect the new traffic pattern, as detailed in the Village Plan approved by the community and Council in 2007 after a two-year development and consultation process.   Necessary resurfacing will also take place at the adjacent bus turnaround as part of the intersection works.
